I ruptured my Achilles tendon in November right before Thanksgiving. I had been working out quite a bit in the 4 months prior to the injury, going to the gym, swimming, lifting, running, etc, trying to lose a few pounds and get back into good shape.
A few guys from work asked me if I wanted to play basketball on Tuesday's during lunch. Why not? Right? I went to the gym that morning and had a great workout, showered and went to work. I wasn't sure if I was going to play, but I packed an additional gym bag just in case. I decided to play but was held up in a conference call and got to the court about 10 minutes late. I did a quick stretch of my legs and jumped in.
This is the first time I have played competitive basketball in about 15 years, previously I just messed around in the gym, shooting around, doing basic shooting and dribbling drills with a friend of mine, nothing serious. After about 10 minutes of running up and down the court I was getting pretty tired. After 30 minutes I was dead tired and looking for a break. Well I got that break, 30 minutes in it felt like someone kicked me in the back of the leg and I fell to the ground. I tried to get up but my heel was numb and my foot just wouldn't react the way it normally did. I had a full rupture of my tendon that required surgery to stitch it back together.
A week or so later I had the surgery. The doctor said it went well and I was only in pain for a couple of days. I was in a splint for 2 weeks and a full cast for another 2. After that I got a walking boot with heel wedges. The first couple of days I slowly put pressure on my foot and sort of half walked with the crutches. It took me at least 4 or 5 days before I was walking fully without anything. I also started physical therapy during this time which seems to help the flexibility immensely. I am now 1.5 weeks out from moving on to just a sneaker and feeling really good about the injury.
It seems like it's been forever since I could walk without some kind of boot, crutches, cane, or scooter. I am really looking forward to driving again.
